The Curators: Art Journalist Sara Schifano on her 5 NYC gallery staples

Liam Gillick at Casey Kaplan | NYC Top 5 Art Galleries Guide | meltingbutter.com

Everyone knows New York City is a mecca for art with all of its museums, galleries and art centres but not everyone knows where to look for it beyond the city’s more obvious and famous institutions.

That’s why I decided to call upon art expert (and one of my best friends!), Sara Schifano to uncover for us some of her favourite art hotspots in NYC.

Currently the Editor-in-Chief of BLOUIN Artinfo Italy, Sara is a Milan native and currently resides between her hometown and New York City. “Having grown up in a fashion and design capital, when looking at art I’m interested in seeing what the results are when these different languages collide”. When it comes to contemporary art, what she looks for is emotion and strong content, no matter what form it takes. “I don’t believe Art should necessarily be ‘beautiful’, we have design or fashion for that. As hard as it is to pick a handful of art galleries in New York’s dense art jungle, Sara picked 5 staples she’d never miss when in the city.

HAUSER & WIRTH, CHELSEA

Starting from Chelsea, amongst the mega-galleries a pick is definitely Hauser & Wirth. Originally from Switzerland, this is one of the most important galleries in the world with prominent and provocative artists such as Dieter Roth (don’t miss the bar created by the artist at the gallery on 18th street), Paul McCarthy and Martin Creed to name a few.

CASEY KAPLAN, CHELSEA

Moving up to 21st street Casey Kaplan’s universe never ceased to grow since he opened his first space in SoHo back in the 90s. A great talent scout, this gallery offers a ‘designy’ language and actively involves the artists in the curation of its shows. Counting on big names such as Liam Gillick and Jonathan Monk, Kaplan also meets Sara’s personal tastes with artists such as Nathan Carter and Diego Perrone.

LISA COOLEY, LOWER EAST SIDE

To have a refresher, definitely head to the Lower East side, first stop at Norfolk Street to visit Lisa Cooley, queen of the neighborhood’s coolness and enjoy the show, ever tasteful, while blurting philosophically with the cool kids.

UNTITLED, LOWER EAST SIDE

Keep going down to find Untitled on Orchard Street. This gallery has a beautiful space, and the ability to smell trends with a definite European taste. Don’t miss out on Ian Tweedy and David Adamo’s work.

NURTURE ART, BUSHWICK

Most artists live in Brooklyn, and as a resident and lover of the borough herself, Sara’s last pick is NURTUREart in Bushwick. The name says it all for this Non-profit space directed by fellow Italian Marco Antonini. Here the new generations of artists get all sorts of opportunities to make it in the cruel art world. You also don’t want to miss the monthly salons, “Muse Fuse”, with insiders from the art world.
